The brother who grabbed

Twins, and they fight before they are born. Esau comes out first; Jacob comes out holding his heel, and the name they give him means exactly that — he grabs. He lives up to it. He buys his brother's birthright for a bowl of stew on a day Esau is too hungry to think, and later he puts on his brother's clothes and goat-hair on his arms and lies to his blind father's face for the blessing. He gets it, and it costs him everything: twenty years of exile, a brother who wants him dead, a household of grudges he will never quite untangle. God's promise runs through this family and is not cancelled by it — but Genesis refuses to pretend the family deserved it, or that deceit came free.
