The friend who gave away his robe

Jonathan is Saul's son and heir. David is the shepherd who is going to take the throne that should have been Jonathan's. By every ordinary calculation they should be enemies. Instead Jonathan takes off his robe and armour, his sword and his bow and belt, and gives them to David — handing over, in a single gesture, the symbols of the crown. When Saul's jealousy turns murderous, Jonathan risks his own life to warn his friend, and takes a spear thrown at him by his father for it. They meet in a field to say goodbye, knowing they will probably not meet again, and they weep. The Bible gives more space to this friendship than to most battles, which is a judgement about what matters.
