Two on the road to Emmaus

Two followers walk the seven miles home to Emmaus on Sunday afternoon, talking about the wreckage. A stranger joins them and asks what they are discussing, and they stop, looking sad. They tell him everything, including the line that carries all their disappointment: we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Then he takes them through Moses and all the prophets, explaining that the Messiah had to suffer. They still do not recognise him. At the door they press him to stay, and at the table he takes bread, gives thanks, and breaks it — and their eyes are opened, and he vanishes. They are back on the road to Jerusalem within the hour, saying: did not our hearts burn within us while he talked with us on the road?
