Wind, fire, and every language
“‘It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams.”Acts 2:17 · WEB
About a hundred and twenty people are waiting in an upstairs room when a sound like a rushing wind fills the house and what looks like tongues of fire rests on each of them. They begin to speak in other languages, and the festival crowd outside — Jews from every nation under heaven — each hear their own native tongue. Some say they are drunk. Peter, who six weeks earlier denied knowing Jesus to a servant girl, stands up and preaches, quoting Joel: I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Three thousand are added that day. At Babel God scattered people by confusing their speech; here he gathers them without erasing the difference. Nobody has to stop being Parthian or Egyptian or Arab to hear what God is saying.
