Wrestling until daybreak

Twenty years later Jacob is coming home, and Esau is coming to meet him with four hundred men. He sends his family across the river and stays behind alone — and a man wrestles with him until daybreak. The story never quite tells us who started it. When the stranger cannot overpower him he touches Jacob's hip and puts it out of joint, and still Jacob holds on: I will not let you go unless you bless me. He is asked his name, which is the whole point — the last time he was asked that, in front of his blind father, he lied. This time he says it: Jacob. The grabber. And he is given a new one: Israel, one who wrestles with God. He walks away blessed, and limping. Both are true for the rest of his life.
