A new heaven and a new earth

The Bible's last vision is not people escaping to heaven; it is heaven coming down. John sees a new heaven and a new earth, and a city descending, and a voice announcing that God's dwelling place is now among people — he will dwell with them, and they will be his people. Then the line that answers every page of grief before it: he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. Behold, I am making all things new. At the centre of the city runs a river, and on its banks the tree of life, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations. The story that began in a garden ends in a garden city, with the gate left open.
