Asleep in the storm

Let us go across to the other side, he says, and they set out at evening. A squall comes down on the lake, the waves break into the boat, and it begins to fill. Several of these men are professional fishermen; if they are frightened, it is serious. Jesus is asleep on a cushion in the stern. They wake him with a question that is really an accusation: do you not care that we are perishing? He rebukes the wind and says to the sea, peace, be still — and there is a dead calm. Then he turns to them: why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? Mark records their reaction precisely, and it is not relief. It is a second and larger fear: who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
