Five loaves, two fish

Five thousand men, plus women and children, have followed him into open country and it is getting late. Jesus asks Philip where they can buy bread — John says he asked to test him, since he already knew what he would do. Philip does the arithmetic: eight months' wages would not buy each person a bite. Andrew finds a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish, and says the obvious: but what are they among so many? Jesus gives thanks and distributes, and everyone eats until they are full, and twelve baskets of fragments are left over. The crowd tries to make him king by force, and he withdraws. The next day, when they track him down wanting more bread, he tells them what the sign meant: I am the bread of life.
