Bread, a cup, and a towel

It is Passover, and Jesus knows this is the last meal. Before it begins he gets up, wraps a towel around himself, and washes his friends' feet — the job of the lowest servant in the house, and he does it for Judas too. Peter objects and is told that unless he is washed he has no part in him. Then Jesus takes the bread of the ancient rescue meal and says it is his body, and the cup and says it is his blood of a new covenant. Fifteen hundred years of Passover suddenly have a person standing in the middle of them. He gives them one new commandment: love one another as I have loved you — by this everyone will know whose you are. Then they sing a hymn and go out to the garden.
