The garden, and the cup

In Gethsemane Jesus tells his friends that his soul is very sorrowful, even to death, and asks them to stay awake with him. Then he goes a little further and falls on his face. My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will. He asks three times. Luke says his sweat was like great drops of blood. This is not a man calmly executing a plan; it is a man who does not want to do this and does it. His friends fall asleep — the honest detail no inventor would include. Then torches come through the trees, Judas identifies him with a kiss, Peter cuts off a man's ear and Jesus heals it, and every one of them runs.
