A rabbi of that era did not recruit; students applied to him, and the best were chosen. Jesus walks along a lakeshore and picks working men off their boats. Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Later he calls a tax collector straight out of his booth — a man his own people counted a traitor — and then eats dinner at his house with the rest of them. The twelve he assembles include a zealot who wanted Rome thrown out and a collaborator who worked for Rome, which should have been unworkable. Not one of them is qualified. Luke's version has Peter, after a miraculous catch, telling Jesus to go away because he is a sinful man. Jesus does not argue the point. He just says, from now on you will be catching people.
