The voice at the river

John the Baptist is in the desert in camel hair, telling crowds to repent and be baptised. Then Jesus comes to be baptised too, and John objects — I need to be baptised by you. Jesus insists. As he comes up out of the water the sky opens, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice says: this is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. That is said before Jesus has preached a sermon, healed anyone, or done a single thing the world counts. Immediately after, the Spirit drives him into the desert, and for forty days he is tempted — bread, spectacle, power. He answers each with Scripture. The approval came first; the testing came after. That order matters to anyone who has ever tried to earn a father's pleasure.
