Walls that fell

Moses is dead and Joshua inherits a job he did not ask for. God's word to him is repeated until it is impossible to miss: be strong and courageous, do not be frightened, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. The first city is Jericho, and the battle plan is not a battle plan at all. March around the walls once a day for six days in silence. On the seventh, march seven times, blow the horns, and shout. That is it. Nothing about it is militarily sensible, which is the point — the land is a gift, not a conquest, and the way they take the first city is designed so that nobody can claim the credit. Inside the walls, a foreign woman named Rahab who hid the spies is spared with her whole family, and ends up in the family line of Jesus.
