Moses sees the land

Forty years later a new generation stands at the edge of the land, and Moses, one hundred and twenty years old, gives them the long farewell that is Deuteronomy. At its heart is one sentence Jews have recited twice a day ever since: Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one — and you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. Teach them to your children, he says; talk about them at home and on the road, when you lie down and when you rise. Then he climbs Nebo, and God shows him the whole land, north to south — and tells him he will not enter it. He dies there, and no one knows his grave. The leader who brought them out does not go in. Someone else always finishes the work.
