Wise men, and a frightened king

Scholars from the east follow a star to Jerusalem and ask the wrong man a dangerous question: where is he who has been born king of the Jews? Herod, who murdered his own sons to protect his throne, is troubled — and all Jerusalem with him. His own scribes find the answer in five minutes: Bethlehem, per Micah. He sends the foreigners on with a lie about wanting to worship too. They find the child, kneel, and give gold, frankincense and myrrh. Warned in a dream, they go home another way, and Joseph takes his family to Egypt overnight. Herod's response is the massacre of the village's infants. Matthew puts this on the second page of his gospel: from the beginning, power recognised this child as a threat, and the holy family were refugees before Jesus could walk.
